The Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, has condemned in strong terms the recent hike to electricity tarrif by the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission, NERC, which took effect from January 1, 2021.

NLC President, Ayuba Wabba disclosed this to AIT via a voice note, insists that there is an element of deceit in the policy, since the technical committee set after the last increment was still working.

He argues that while countries are giving palliatives to cushion the effect of the economic hardship on citizens occasioned by the Covid-19 pandemic, the Nigerian Government is acting elusive of the current realities.

The Federal Government on September 28, 2020 set up a technical committee on Electricity Tariff reforms, comprising Ministries, Agencies, Departments, NLC and TUC, to examine the justification of the new policy in view of the need for the validation of the basis for the new cost-reflective tariff.
